The History of Steroids
Anabolic steroids are synthetic hormones which were first created for medical reasons. Testosterone was the first steroid ever to be produced, and this was done by synthesising it from Cholesterol. Now and then you will see news headlines of athletes testing positive for anabolic steroids. As of late, this is becoming a more frequent occurrence. Steroid use in sports dates back to 1954 in Vienna where the world weightlifting championships were being held. The Soviets dominated that year and broke a lot of records. Dr John Ziegler who was the United States team’s physician spoke to the Soviets team Doctor about anabolic steroids who openly admitted that he had been giving his weightlifters Testosterone injections. Although today this would have caused disqualifications, back then there were no regulations to anabolic steroid use, and so the Soviets were not held responsible for this.
After seeing how this affected this Soviets, Dr Ziegler made it his mission to develop an oral testosterone derivative which would be more superior, and so Dianabol was born, which soon became the most used Steroid around the world and is still today.
Types of Steroids
Today many different types of Steroids available are available in injectable and oral form. Oral steroids are far more popular than injectables for apparent reasons, and many people don’t want to inject a substance into their bodies. Steroids can be broken down into two categories, bulking and cutting. Although bulking steroids can be used for cutting and vice versa, most people still use specific steroids for cutting and for bulking.
- Testosterone Enanthate
- Testosterone Cypionate
- Sustanon 250
- Deca Durabolin
A cycle refers to using anabolic steroids for a period. Generally, cycles will include one oral steroid stacked with 1 or 2 injectable steroids. Oral steroids have a shorter, and therefore they start working faster, while injectables can have a half-life of 3 to 4 weeks and can take a while before the “kick in”, this is why oral steroids are added to the cycle so that results are seen within the first week.
Cycles usually last around 10 to 12 weeks where injectables are concerned, and orals are only taken for 4 to 6 weeks to avoid liver damage. At the end of a cycle, a PCT is done to speed up the body’s natural production of testosterone, and this helps prevent loss of gains.
Benefits of Using Steroids
- Improved strength: Steroids increase strength at an extremely rapid rate. When on a steroid cycle its common to see weekly increases in strength that would usually take years to accomplish.
- Muscle growth: This is the main reason for steroid use. Steroids can increase muscle growth at a rate that would otherwise take years to achieve. What you can gain from a 12-week steroid cycle could take 3 to 4 years to achieve naturally.
- Anti-catabolic effects: This is the main reason for doing a cycle while on a calorie deficit diet. When a natural person diets they can expect to lose some muscle mass along with fat, however, when on a Steroid cycle you will be able to maintain muscle and even build muscle due to the anti-catabolic effects of Anabolic Steroids.
- Protein synthesis: It’s a common fact that the body can only absorb a certain amount of protein daily. However, steroids can increase protein synthesis and thus allow a user to consume far higher amounts of protein which then leads to faster muscle growth.
Although there are many benefits to anabolic steroid use, one needs to remember that Steroids are illegal for a reason and the side effects far outweigh the benefits. Steroids can cause permanent damage to your body especially when used at high dosages, and one needs to be diligent when thinking about using steroids.
Gone are the days where you could go to a doctor and get a script to buy steroids from a pharmacy, due to steroids being abused by athletes and bodybuilders they are now illegal. The only way to buy steroids now is on the black market, either from a dealer or an online source. When steroids were legal and were purchased from a pharmacy, the only steroids you could get were pharmaceutical grade which was extremely high quality and worked far better than the “underground” stuff. Today pharmaceutical steroids are harder to get hold of and cost a lot more, for this reason, many people opt for black market steroids which usually are lower quality and can cause infections due to them being produced in a non-sterile environment. Only injectable steroids need to cause concern when purchased from an underground lab. Oral steroids don’t need to be produced in a sterile environment.
